Managed to crush my factory gas tank skid up into the tank today. Also put enough of a bow in my engine/tranny skid that it's touching the exhaust now.
As for skids. I beefed up my Bud Builts by welding some 1.5 x.25 angle on the backside... Making a triangle along the middle sections. Seriously strengthened them. Once you get those off and pound the dents out I'd suggest something similar.
Doing some surveying on a ranch in Sanderson, TX beat up the truck for a few days on the mountains then lbj failed as soon as we touched payment the tire came off. Lucky us it happend on the side of the highway and not on the tip of a mountain.
Looks like the bolt holes are empty. I'm guessing they ust backed out. I believe Toyota recommends you replace those with new ones each time you do any maintenance on the bj's. I just used loctite.
Toyota recommends using new bolt because they are super weak/shit bolts that require low torque, most people over torque them and they stretch break and or back out . I hit mine with a 12volt dewault 3/8 impact and it was still to much torque, and always use locktite ,I upgraded mine so not have this issue ever again .
I've pulled mine and retorqued several times, the manual (at least for 95.5-04 taco's and 96-02 4runners) states 37ft/lbs but its actually 59ft/lbs. I think a lot of people get the spec from the manual and they either back out or sheer. I've been looking to upgrade mine though just for cheap insurance. I'll replace them when I get to my control arm bushings.
