I was just reading about this on TW. Looks like a bunch of those guys, and TTORA, were at the race and real close to the wreck as it happened.

Will pay to see Cmack get tased
The comments are hilarious. People blaming the driver. Ridiculous. The spectators knew the risks of standing near speeding racecars.

My thoughts and prayers to the victims families and survivors.

I feel embarrassed to even say this since it is such a tragedy and has nothing to do with me.

...but I was going to take my 15 nephew (visiting from the USVI) to that race and hang with Mohawk Mike (Double Cab Mike) etc. Apparently, he moved his group from this spot 'cause he didn't feel good about it.

We were going to go camping but he said, "Paul, can I help you fix your truck so that we can go wheeling?" Long story short, we broke in my diff by going to Las Vegas for the night (stopping often to let things cool), ran 50 miles of the Mojave Road, then we headed to Slash X in Lucerne Valley and then did a run in Lucerne (565 miles).

Then we went to my cabin to change the diff fluid. He was more concerned that Zoom didn't get to go wheeling with us, he wanted to go pick her up so she could go to the race with us and wheel on Sunday. We became more focused on her and decided to bail on the race. I am now glad we did.

My heart goes out to Mike and all others involved in this whole tragedy and I can only hope that good will come from it.

God bless any and all affected by this tragic moment.

Damn. That is pretty gruesome sounding. I can't believe they started throwing rocks at the driver.

Get a bunch of drunks emotional and you can imagine the scene!

I'm really surprised things like this don't happen more at those types of events, and the European rally racing, when spectators stand inches from the track, dart out across the track, and in some cases the spectators booby trap the track so that vehicles get more air or flip. But it is a tragedy that it happened.

It is horrible but at least one or two spectators die at Baja every year as well. This is a dangerous sport and it claimed the lives of 8 people this weekend. My condolences to the friends of families of the deceased and injured. There were TTORA, CT, TW members who were off-duty EMTs, RNs, and firefighters on scene that really contributed to saving peoples lives.

x2, it was horrible, but we kind of knew it was coming, we were even joking around before it happened about whether or not a truck would plow into the fans. My truck was parked 10 feet from the edge of the course, front facing the course, and 2 TW members and I were standing in the bed for extra protection. We were elevated enough to see everything. The footage shown on CNN was taken by a guy standing in front of my truck, you can hear my music in the background. They need more oversight in these events in the future, whether it is more signs or at least one person on a loudspeaker reminding people to stand back, especially at rock pile. Fact is, you cant govern 50 miles of race track, but after 11 years, you know where people are gonna congregate.
