Due to restrictions on the number of vehicles at a campsite I am going to go ahead and reserve the spots at group sites.

I've got two friends that are interested in tagging along as well. I'll update here as I hear more. Do you have a max number of vehicles for this trip?

Also, how are you storing gas cans? On the roof?

I am going to try to get the group sites so I think our max is 8 vehicles at the sites. I am going to use a hi clearance hitch rack to carry 15-20 gallons, some firewood, and if needed toilet.

Need to borrow my hitch rack again? We can modify it if you want to make it more high clearance.

First post updated with campsite info. I need a number of how many humans will be with each vehicle to make sure we have enough camp spaces.

I talked to the wife about this trip yesterday, she's on board with me going. So put me down as a yes. I'll start making plans. Likely just me in my vehicle, since it's Big Bend I'll likely leave the dog at home.

How intense is the wheeling you're planning? Harder or easier than our Bridgeport trips? I'm planning on getting the locker in, but there's a chance it won't happen.

I've got a friend with a Taco that's planning on joining too. 4WD, 33s, lift, sliders, rear locker.

The roughest I am planning with a group this size is the unmainted 4x4 roads. That will vary in difficulty depending on weather before we go. But there will not be any intentional situations where something mag break. IMO no locker will be fine.

Its easy wheeling... ground clearance is your friend out there.

There are only a handful of places I went into 4x4 because I really needed to. The majority of the 4x4 trails are rated as such due to multiple stream bed crossings with lots of loose sand. The un-maintained 4x4 trails will mainly be due to brush growth but there are places where traction is less than good. The only reason I did not drive many of them last time was I was traveling as a single rig and did not want to push my luck. In a group we are in good shape.

I will try to post up tonight a rough idea of what I thought would make for a good driving trip with some hiking also if anyone wanted to do that.

I have not wheeled in the SP, but the biggest obstacles is the F-N brush and thorny shrubs on dike bike trails, lol!! occasionally a stream bed on the NP side, if it's wet or moisture there are some 100ft crossing sometimes the path requires going down the dry wash stream beds then back on a non maintain road, I have pulled 3 trucks out of stream beds and it was bone dry out there in the desert, if wet you better know what your getting into...

dike bikes are big in the LBGT community.

Investigating roof mounted fuel storage options. Rotopax seems to be "expensive but worth it" and NATO cans are almost unanimously worth it. Anyone have strong feelings about either option?

I'm not a fan of Rotopax's capacity to cost ratio.

I used rotopax on my roof for the Arkansas trip last year. Worked great. I got my rotopax at a kind of decent price but still high for their volume.

Just going to use a high clearance hitch rack. Easiest and most cost effective option.
