What's everyone's thoughts on amount of extra gas? I've got cans to carry 20 gallons, but I don't know if that's necessary or not. I know Zech said he's bringing 10-15, but I'll probably have to store the cans in pairs. Is 10 enough, or do I need a mounting solution for all 4 cans?

Last time I went to BBRSP I only brought 5 and it was not near enough. YMMV as I get crappy MPG. But next time I'll bring as much as I can. Probably 25. Going into town daily sucked since it was a 4 hour round trip drive.

Based on my results from the Ozark trip with my current setup I will probably plan to bring 15 gallons and might bring 20 if I have the extra gas can. I was using less than 5 gallons a day in the Ozarks and we drove a little less than I would expect to drive in BBRSP this next time.

Needs to hurry up and get here. I am ordering 2 or 3 more gas cans next week. At 5.5 gallons each that will give me 16.5 gallons of fuel for the trip to refill with. Firewood is the only other large item I have to ensure room for.

My biggie right now is making sure I have room for a couple evenings worth. Everyone on the trip should bring enough for a few days and then we will all be good for the trip.

I should be able to grab some from my inlaws, they've got more than enough laying around. They're on pretty wooded land, and my FIL is religious about brush clearing.

Everyone who is looking at going on this trip should see if the State Park pass makes sense for them. Last time I was out there the day costs for 2 people was half the cost of the pass.

The pass is ~$70 and is good for your family to enter the state parks for free for a year after the purchase month. For camping use all you pay is the overnight camping fee. My sammich maker and I have used ours enough this year that it has already paid for itself between camping trips and day trips to hike.

Just food for thought to save some money and get outdoors more.

I had one last year and plan on renewing this year as well.

What time is everyone looking to arrive at the park on the first day? The first night's camp is about 30-45 mins from the ranger station. There is a good bit more trail past it that can be checked out if we get up there soon enough. Sunset is around 5:30pm that late in December.

I am looking to leave DFW around 4 or 5 am. I am hoping to be out there between 2 to 4 pm with traffic and gas stops. Don't forget to fill up in Alpine and then top off in Presidio. Anyone have anything else we need to start working out?

43 days away now....

Ethan and I will be in DFW on the 26th but head home to load things up....Zech would be great to find a place to meet up with you on the way.

Will pick a place on I-10. Assuming you will be coming from I-10 from San Antonio?

Looks like a few of us will be meeting up in Alpine at noon on the 27th. This should put us at the ranger station at 3pm. We will have a decent bit of time to look around, stretch legs, get to camp and enjoy the first night.

3 hours to the Ranger station.. man you guys are going the wrong way. Go through Marfa and hit Pinto Canton road. Much better than highway.

Serious.. rethink your route. Highway blows. Go highway going home. Adventure going there.
