Okay, how do I know what transmission I have? I know it's a w56 but there's a w56-a, -b, -c, -d, and -e according to Marlin's site.

Look for a stamp on the case? Or see if you can check the vin in Cheltins?

The engine is still a ways away. It won't be going in until the last weekend of August. But the current engine should be coming out soon.

Ordered a HD Shift Lever Ball Seat, HD Shift Lever Socket, and a Shift Handle Boot from Marlin to fix the slop in my trans shifter. There was so much play in it it was hard to tell when it was in gear rather than neutral! This should fix the majority of it. Maybe it will keep it from hitting the transfer case selector when putting it in reverse too.

So after a bit of looking I've determined mine is a W56-B. The shift boot mine has is the square one which was only put on A's and B's. I also read that the A was only available on the EFI engine in 85.

Good job finding that info.

Oh... uh, guess I should take another look at mine.

I read a few posts from people on YT saying their's did it. But there were also people saying their's didn't. Didn't read into it any more than that. Figure if this doesn't fix it I'll look into it more. These were parts I needed to replace anyway.

Got my trans shifter "rebuilt". Now I have maybe a 1/4" of play in first gear instead of the 1"-1 1/4" I had before. It's still hitting the 4x4 selector in reverse though. I think Drew may be right with the top shift vs forward shift thing.

I wanna say my 86 truck started doing that when it got older (200k +) didn't do it when it was brand new.

I had that same issue with the shifters colliding in 4WD and reverse with Clyde. They would collide but it wasn't really an issue, never caused anything to pop out or prevent shifting.

Good to know Sean. I just don't want it popping it into 4Hi when I put it in reverse.
