Well now that we got a CB thread...

I just picked up an Cobra S500 external speaker cause my CB is in the cuby and I can't hear shit with the lid closed. My Cobra 18 has a hook up for the speaker, but no power source for it. I checked the directions for the CB and they don't say anything except that it has a port for an external speaker. The speaker didn't come with any directions and Cobra doesn't have any on their site.

My CB is powered directly from the battery and I have a in line fuse in the cab behind my fuse box. Do I need to do the same with the speaker? The plug it has looks like it would just plug into the back of a cb, but I searched and none of Cobra's CB's have a power source for a speaker. I can't find anything on external speaker hook up. Hell I don't even know where to mount the big ass thing without it being seen but I gotta figure out installation first anyway.

Any clues WTF I am supposed to do with the red wire?

Man I had a post about powered speakers... but obviously that is powered. I'd call Walcott CB and ask them. Unless that is just for power and the ground is provided through the mounting.

I searched the web and found nothing. Maybe I should of done some more research before buying it, but for $20 I figured WTH. Now that I think about it maybe Kevin from ATO would know. He has a sweet set up with 2 speakers in his headliner. If he doesn't know Ill make some calls tomorrow.

The external speakers usually just plug into the back of the cb and the cb will either have a switch on the front or will switch to it automatically. My old cobra 29 had a place for external speaker and pa speaker with a switch up front.

So basically it uses the power from your CB to drive the speaker. No internal amp. I ordered that same speaker about 3 months ago and the thing was on backorder and the order was cancelled. Good to know Cobra is kinda exaggerating on it's 15 watt speaker.. It might be able to handle 15 watts but it's not built in.

Yea, it says 15 watt "capacity" lol

Where were you thinking of putting yours? My center consul is free, but I like it that way. Maybe in the rear somewhere...IDK.... Ill have to play around with it. When I hook it up this time, I'm leaving my SWR meter attached so I never have to put it on to tune again. Also finally got some stud mounts for my spring mounts so I can trash the POS quick disconnects I have. Every time I brushed a tree they would bend and get loose killing any chance of a good signal and maybe my CB due to loss of ground.

I was thinking on the driver side, next to the seat. On the B pillar but down a little lower. Not sure how big that speaker was or if it would fit.. but that was the plan.

Ahh! Good to know. My new solution will be to use the factory tweeter location since I don't use mine.

I was looking at it today and I might mount it on the back of the center consul right behind the cup holders. It pivots 180 degrees so I could keep it facing the rear when not in use and flip it up (horizontal) when in use. I took out my back seats and don't really care what it looks like from behind. I just want it clean looking up front. I don't mind a couple holes in the plastic where no one will ever see them if I take it out either or I could just fill them with some caulk or similar. Should be and easy install as well since it's right next to the CB.
