Did you guys use the handhelds on the trip?

When I let people use my radios, I set it up and then lock the keypad so that only the squelch, volume and PTT button works. 
At the current prices those things are pretty sweet. I do much prefer a 50 watt or more mobile unit with one or two of those while out of the truck.
One of my favorite for our trucks - I don't have one of these but they are great rugged radios with a forward facing speaker. $140

Didn't we figure you could get that radio with antenna and cable for under $200. Thing works great!! Just bring your manual with ya.
I am still looking for a second spot to mount a radio or maybe just stick to a decent set of handheld radios. Currently working with my father-in-law on some handheld radios to use in our subdivision for bad weather since the county emergency services tend to forget we are out here in bad weather.

In the Morning Glory area that we were in this weekend, it quite literally could save ones life.Doesn't sound lucky to me. I generally don't want to talk to the people that are sitting in the vehicle with me. Much less people 40 miles away. Maybe I'm just not a people person though
In remote areas like that it makes a lot of sense. Sadly the majority of the wheeling areas around here are less than 10 miles across (average probably 2-3 miles across actually). In West Texas around Big Bend and the Guadalupe mountains I can see the better radio distance being critical. I know I wish I had something when we were snowed in at camp in the back of Big Bend Ranch State Park last Christmas.

I use a remote mounted face. My radio can be mounted anywhere. The face plate is mounted just below the heater controls.
Interesting. Will have to keep that in mind when updating my dash.
There are a lot of acronyms I still need to learn on the radio side of things.

I'll post some links to some bitchin handhelds when I get on my pc. But for those that have not used a ham. Shut your ignorant pie hole. You are just making yourself look like a mouth breathing retard. There is NO comparison to a CB. Unless you want to talk to truckers and set up a glory hole at exit <insert your moms exit here>.

- True story. And I am certain many truckers probably use them as well although the CB certainly has it's place in the trucking market.
