Going to Moab - Advice?

xodeuce

mmmmmmbourbon.
I'm headed to Moab in May of this year as part of an event a friend's 4x4 club is doing. I'm registered for Chicken Corners, Fins and Things, and 7 Mile Rim.

I'm looking for anyone who's done Moab before to make recommendations on tires. Was thinking General Grabber AT2's, but not sure if that'll be the best on the rock and stuff. I'm thinking I'll do 285's and the OME lift kit on my 2nd gen. I figure I'll need the full 3". (I'm sure that'll warrant some jokes)

Also, any other advice for camping in Moab for 4 nights, as to what to take, things to prep on the truck, etc., etc.?

Best advice as I've learned that pertains to all offroading is trail armor first, skids and sliders, then gears and lockers then worry about suspension and bigger tires. Suspension and bigger tires just aren't going to keep your truck from getting munched up on the rocks and lockers will take you farther and even the largest tires can.

X1000 on protecting your truck first. That rock is unforgiving, and the armor will pay for itself in one trip.

X3 above^ I ran Moab last year and will be back in May myself. you should be ok for the most part but you might need some sliders on 7 mile as there are some spots where I put them to use. Fins has some really sharp departures so be ready to drag the rear bumper. Have fun and get after it!:D

We need to know what you are working with here as far as the truck goes. Is it stock? TRD OR? Armour and a locker is what you need.

If I were to redo my mod list order. The full skids would of been first. The peace of mind when u bash a rock off them is worth the full price of the bud built skids. And the stock OR tires will take you further than you would think on dry ground. Once it gets wet out, they aren't worth shit. The atrac and locker is a pretty awesome combo. Ask any here that has wheeled w ppl w that system and it is an amazing little peice of technology

Gonna be in Moab from May 6th - 16th. Trail lineup is as follows: Hells revenge, Metal Masher, Moab Rim, 7 Mile Rim (night run), and I'm sure others but those are the top of the list.

I'll be in Slickrock campground May 4-7, leaving on May 8. You know any of the guys from Rising Sun 4x4 in CO?

^ I don't know any of them this is a solo run for us, but we do have a buddy coming over from Summit County CO for the W/E so we may stop by and shoot the shit with you guys for a while. Who knows may even see you all out on the trails. These type of events are cool and have done plenty of them in the past with TTORA and others, but wheelin in groups makes me kinda crazy, anything over 3-4 trucks is to much for me. I like to traverse a lot of ground in a short period of time.

I've been to Moab. I only live 3 hours from it. You guys doing Cruise Moab? Its going on in May.

The trails you're signed up for aren't too tough. Everything is important depending on how hard of trails you plan to run. Armor, lockers, lifts (ground clearance), and tires are all important depending. Sand stone is very sticky. Almost any good AT or MT tires work well.

I spent 6-7 days in Moab last spring .

along w/ a 2-3" suspension lift I would suggest skids and sliders but good strong tire are a must a solid 32 or 33 " tire will get you over all the trails you've listed I suggest BFGs w/ their tri guard side wall to minimize side wall failue when aired down for max traction. 7 mi rim is a good trail to warm up on. ive done it, kokopelli's, wipe out hill, green day, strike ravine, The Big Ugly, helldorado canyon, klondike bluffs, yellow cat mesa, again and again hill, 3D, and tip toe behind the rocks among others.

recovery gear is mandatory

Good info. I've done the 2-3" OME full kit (885's and Dakar packs) and have a set of 285 BFG's ready to go on as soon as I have it aligned. Thanks for the tips!
