There is nothing like an M-14 for a 7.62 rifle. I would trust my life to one of those before an AR.

When I bought my XD Mod 2 a few weeks ago a guy in front of me was buying a new Springfield M1A1 SOCOM and man it was sexy. And damn it was $$$$. I think his bill out the door was $2100 and change. But he did buy a soft case and some ammo. :)

Yeah; the good ones are a couple of those big bills but dang they are sexy.

Sure, just not as easy to build a short barrel M1A

Very true; but how short would you really want to go with a 7.62? I would think 16" would be the short end of it; anything less and you really lose range/ fps. I saw this first hand the other day when I was shooting my 300 BlkOut over a chronograph. I had the 16" barrel shooting 147gr bullets at 1831 fps and the 10" barrel was shooting at 1563 fps.

And I'll be honest. This guy was an old guy and he had some super super hot side piece that reminded me of the hot chic on Modern Family. So I really didn't pay a whole lot of attention to the gun like I should have. LOL.

Another reason to get an M1A - it will make my wife uber hot.

Well, 7.62 has different properties than 300blk, so it won't be as big of a difference. Planning to go 10.5" and don't intend to use it for anything beyond 300yds.

The increased bullet drop from lower velocity is still negligible on "tactical" targets at that range.

When you get it built up I would like to run it over a chronograph and see how much of that powder is getting burnt as a fireball. I have shot a 4" 7.62 rifle before - dear Lord the fireball was impressive but for a defense situation it was crap. I just do not think you are going to get what you are looking for with 10"; the larger the powder column the more barrel it likes to burn and push.

I second this. 300 BO was designed to burn completely in an 8" barrel. I'd go with that over 7.62. I'd also go with an AK platform if you wanted a last ditch "plan B" rifle. You have the accuracy you need with the Mossberg, why not go with something that's literally being battle tested everyday? The AK. Also there will be TONS of extra ammo and AK mags in a Plan "B" scenario. There is a bunch of American manufactures now that are making great AK's.

Avg. Velocity Loss of .308 24fps/inch.

I've just seen too many failures with the .308 AR platforms at the range. They are finniky as hell apparently.

So with a 10.5" barrel, you're looking at ~2,534.4 fps according to the chart in the link I posted.

300 yds and less the 300blkout and AK are great rounds.

Yep, 300 BO is a damn good round. Only argument you can make against it is that ammo is expensive and harder to find than 7.62x39.

I am currently having good success reloading my own and happy to report that my reloads are hotter than factory ammo without failures. As for a short-to-medium range rifle I doubt there is a better comparison than between the Blackout and 7.62x39. My only preference for the AK being that it does have decades of dependable battle experience while the AR is a solid enough platform when properly maintained. Anything past 300 yds and I will happily break out my 300 Win Mag. :)

I need to get back into reloading ammo. Last time I did it was 1990. I reloaded about 400 rnds of .357 for my year in Alaska. I did it in 27 degree weather outdoors under my carport. Lesson learned. Bulldot shrinks in 27 degree weather. Ended up pushing the primer dent out of damn near every round. Some to the point it would not allow me to rotate the cylinder. Not good. LOL

I will have to remember to not reload when it is freezing balls outside. lol I am going to order a few more reloading/casting tools after I get back from Big Bend. I should be setup to smelt/cast my own bullets, powder coat them, and then load them. Going from making the lead into a bullet all the way to making the bullet fly.

That makes sense; but I would tack on a few inches to that barrel.

As for tomorrow - if the day goes decent I should get some range time to zero and chrono some loads.

For some reason I feel the need to go to the range.
