K-Trail 2015

I want to do the full Kiamichi Trail in January. I'm planning on January 1st thru 4th (maybe thru the 5th). Aaron and I did he eastern portion last year. That turned out to be a logging trip with all the downed trees. I still had fun. I'm bringing a chain saw this trip. I want to start off in Clayton and drive the entire trail.

This trip is a go.

Tentative plan:

Leaving Houston Thur Jan 1st at 9am. Pickup up Aaron in Lindale and traveling to Clayton Lake SP. Hit the Kiamichi Trail the morning of Fri Jan 2nd and drive to the Kiamichi Fire Tower. We can camp at the tower or drive along Little Mountain Rd (4675) to Billy Creek Campground. If we camp at Billy Creek Fri night, we can drive back up Little Mountain Rd on Sat to get some more offroad driving in and then continue eastward along the K Trail. Time defendant we can then drive out to Beaver's Bend SP and camp Sat night. This will give us an hour headstart on the drive home Sunday morning. If we lack time, we can find a spot to camp in the Ouachita NF.

Plan is to eat community meals for dinners and breakfasts. Lunch can be individual as we're be eating lunch on the road or on the trail.

Thurs Dinner: Lyndall- white bean and chicken chili and cornbread.
Fri breakfast: Kendal - breakfast tacos
Fri dinner: David- chicken and wild rice
Sat breakfast: Lyndall - sausage frittata
Sat dinner: James - ???
Sun breakfast: Aaron - sauage ball things

Ive got plenty of firewood for the group and will be brining an ezup in the event it rains.

A beer exchange is proposed, so bring your favorite beers. I'm bringing cans, as they crush easier.

That's Mr Asshole to you
I might be game but my truck is too wide for a lot of that trail so an open seat would need to be available. The Tacoma suffered serious pin strip on that part.

I'll have an open seat and can pick you up. Ideally, it'd be good to have another vehicle along for the trip.

I haven't ran the rough section from Clayton running eastward. From my readings its doable in any high clearance 4x4. The trail is remote, so recovery and tools are a must. This is more of a scenic drive / camping trip. In January, other than a working vehicle, a good tent would be an important piece of equipment. Here's a recent YouTube video that's shows the popular part of the trail

Schedule change at work. I could possibly be in. All depends if they're giving us the night of the 1st off or not.

So you're saying there's a chance!
I'll have to check Christmas/Family plans with the wife.... but this looks like a pretty cool trip.

Edit:
Didn't y'all have some issues with locals last time?

Ordered an Oklahoma Atlas and Gazetteer from Amazon. Apparently I had $3 worth of book discounts for choosing no rush Prime shipping. I now have Texas, Colorado, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

I wish I would have taken pictures. I have these locations marked from our last trip as good camping spots. Not sure if these are legit sites or not.

34°37'28.30"N 94°31'11.46"W
34°40'40.31"N 94°27'7.11"W

Scoping out Google Earth, I see a good river crossing on NF 6032 at 34°38'50.14"N 94°32'35.33"W

Depending on time and route Saturday, Billy Creek Campground would be a good ending spot.
