LOL, you missed the flat bill region over on the Left Coast

The UPS Pressure region pushed them off the coast! Kinda like a tsunami...

Thanks for gheying up my thread with that cowboy pic...and yeah I'm getting bad noises from the rear diff. The locker won't stay engaged and if I go over 2000rpm it spins and makes a horrible grinding noise. I suspect the driveline angle as the original culprit but me drivin hard probably fucked the locker up. Looking to do an elocker swap (replacing whole axle just in case it is a gear set). I've been driving in 4HI and it drives a bit smoother but the rear still pops and bucks, just not as badly I'm hoping b/c of less torque on the rear diff?

*My brakes are spongy as hell (never got to swap the Tundra calipers on) but thats an easy fix
*blew another CV boot (OE boot from before I lifted so not too worried, and I have a spare)

Haven't had time to do anything cause I'm working all the damn time but should have time after the 15th...I'm just praying that its not the gear set cause I'm fixing to buy a house and can't really afford that shit right now!

You wanna bring it on by on your way home from work? We can pull the rear shaft and bleed your brakes

No time amigo, gotta meet my realtor over at the prospective new casa...and I really don't want to pull the rear shaft, Front wheel drive 4Runner is no bueno. And bleeding won't help, I need to replace my shit...maybe "spongy" was the wrong adjective

"un-grabby" maybe? lol

I drove the Tacoma as FWD on several occasions and while it was super lame, it was better than the alternative

^This...and I sometimes turn the 4HI off if I'm on the Hwy, I like to coast and accelerate between pops :eyeroll:

I get nervous driving in 4HI all the time, I need to change my t-case oil!!

Do you know what ratio your rear third is? In a pinch you can use a 4cyl third in place of your V6 third and it works just fine.

Frack me..
Damn Mauzer, your in bad shape! Too bad you live pretty far away, I could come over and help tear it apart! Let me know your plan on the brakes.. Looks like I will need to do mine too at some point.

I have the Tundra calipers, pads and rotors I just haven't had the time to install them...will hopefully get to it this weekend unless wedding or house shit comes up

Drew welded my diff drop and while it helped my locker pop it did not solve the problem completely, so now I need to either pull it out or try to save for the elocker (which will be tough right now since I'm buying a house and want to fix it up before my wedding)

well bud, you shouldn't have any trouble getting rid of it if you decide to sell it

Huh? Sell the locker? I guess we can pull it and see if there is any damage to the locker, if not then I'll prob sell it and put the $$ towards sliders for the HF trip I won't be going to

Do you know anyone with access to the tools to check backlash and pinion torque(IE a dial pin indicator with mag base and an inch lb torque wrench)? There are so many people out there running a setup like yours with no issues I find it hard to believe there is a problem with the locker and or the driveline angles. I'm thinking either the springs are loose/installed wrong, or the backlash/bearing preload is too loose and needs to be tightened. Pinion preload should still be good as it was never messed with but check it anyways if you can. You can buy the dialpin indicator with mag base and in/lb torque wrench from your local harbor freight.

Thats what I don't understand either? Gears looked good when we put the locker in, looked like they had been replaced or refurbished b/c they were patterned. I don't have access to the tools and honestly don't really want to mess with it, I'll just pull it and get a selectable like I originally planned. Its just a pain cause its my DD and I can't afford downtime.

Its very possible that you didn't get the adjustment wheels back where they were after you tore it apart causing your backlash and bearing preload to be off. Too much backlash and the gears will grind not enough and the gears will have slop in them. Dame with the preload not enough and the carrier is too loose and spins freely in the bearings too much and it will be to much resistance in the carriers rotation.

Kieths might have been shimmed incirectly from the factory the one in my truck was preload was way too loose and the backlash was at 10 thousands needs to be 6-8 to be in spec ans then there's always the possibility they got the shims mismatched side to side unlikely but possible. The old school wheel adjustment system is just way too easy to screw up the backlash settings.

Actually now that I think about it you don't really need the dialpin indicator to check his backlash you could use some marking compound and just see where the ring gear and pinion gear are contactind and adjust accordingly. Then just get the preload good and tight too tight is better than too loose.

I'm almost positive the gear set is fine, the noise isn't the gears and when the locker locks it drives fine. I'm with Drew on the driveline angle but don't really feel like trying anything else to fix it. The easy solution is just to pull the locker and buy a selectable. I just want to be able to drive the damn thing normally again, 4Hi is killing me on gas!

You missed my point the backlash and bearing preload being wrong will cause you locker to malfunction. The tolerances aren't really enough to effect the gear set but they are enough to screw with the action of the locker.
