So I asked my gf what she wants to do over X mas break. Says a road trip. I ask where and suggest jokingly Moab, she says hell yes! So, sounds like an awesome time. Can anyone tell me anything about that area? Is it free to wheel and stuff?

Holidays in Moab Adventure! 12/28/10-1/1/11. $925./vehicle for all 5 days or $185./day for number of days you want to participate. Join us for fun on the first trip of 4-Wheeling America's 25th year!

We'll meet each morning at a specific location in Moab and then head out on a different trail for a day of 4-wheeling fun and camraderie! Due to snow, we do a lot more recovery on this trip. New Year's Eve will find us on a night run with a campfire, toasting marshmallows and welcoming in the New Year.

Vehicle requirements: CB radio (handheld okay), 31" or better tires, frame-mounted recovery points, snow chains. Helpful but not required, lockers and/traction devices.

I know it may be pricey but he's a great guy to wheel with!

Check out Dangerous Drives on SpeedTV, they did a Moab trip and it snowed like a mofo on them. They had a couple badass AEV Jeeps (one was a Brute with a Hemi and 40's) and a Land Rover. Snow was so deep the Brute was used to clear the path and it had troubles. Super cool episode.

Worth watching

I know it's a trek but Death Valley is a cool place that time of year. We did it last year and may do it again that same week. We want to do something that week and I was thinking either a backpack into the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, Anza Borego or maybe AZ.

The last time I was there, they had gotten a bunch of snow, but it wasn't enough to close the trails. NM is a drier part of the Rockies.

I know some cool places in NM too. :)

Let me know if you guys are coming. I'd like to meet up if possible. Moab winter conditions can be pretty nasty. Around here (NM), wheeling can be had about 90% of the winter. When we get snow, its mostly gone in a day or two. Ice typically can be found in northern shadows most of the winter though. Moab is 3 hours from here. It may be great. It may be hell. Its hit and miss and real hard to say in advance. You almost have to make your decision within a week of travel based on conditions and short term weather forecasts.

I'll let you know if I'm in that area. I'll probably be down near Ruidoso though, hitting up some trails in the Lincoln National Forest. Last time I was there, I did the one up the west saddle of Capitan.

Tell me about it if you don't mind. I haven't clicked on that google map. Is that the trail? I'm going to be in Ruidoso for Thanksgiving. Since its winter, I'll have the truck. I know my bro-in-law who's meeting us there from Austin would like to go on a wheeling trip.

It was a good scenic trail. I did it in my 2wd Ranger that had an auto locker. I never would have made it up without the extra weight of my 2 brother in laws in the bed. There was a good 10" snow 3 days before we headed up there which had melted at lower altitudes, but there was still plenty on the shady mountain trail. We got pretty far before a giant ass tree blocked the road. It's not super technical, but there are some good steep parts with some loose rocks. More like a forest road in most parts, but 100x better than the stuff those guys in Cali post pics of. It is pretty desolate there ("read lots of wildlife"). The only people we saw were a pair of rednecks who happened to be out there doing a little target practice with their six shooters. The road goes even further than it shows on the Google map. There are some small private plots out there, so be careful crossing any fences that don't have cattle guards. Their all on the forest map though I think.

Tell me more tell me more! Ya, I think it could be lenient on the time. I mean just make preparations for two different trips and if the weather is gonna suck then have a safety net to fall back into.
Care to say more on Death Valley Murph?
