My Experience in Sturgis SD, 2014

I know that this is not a motorcycle forum but I do want to share my experience in Sturgis South Dakota. I was approached about going on this trip in January by 2 guys that I have been friends with since I was a teenager, both really great dudes that are considered family, both about 10 years older than me. We all agreed to trailer the bikes and stay in an exorbitantly over priced hotel. Rooms were very hard to find and extremely expensive during rally week. We stayed at an Americas Best Value Inn in Rapid City, about 25 miles from Sturgis, for just under $300 per night! Talk about price gouging, any other time of year this is a $80 night Hotel.

Going into this I was really unsure of what to expect & It seems as though people I spoke to about it all had the same idea in mind. The perception was that it was going to be a very wild Harley exclusive biker trash party but my experience proved that this is completely not true. I admit that I was worried about being the "that guy" riding the Yamaha at first but once I got there I realized that this was not just a Harley thing. While I would say that 80% of the motorcycles were in fact HD, every brand and style was well represented. There we people on 3 wheeled Cam-Am spiders, Moped, dirt bikes, crotch rockets and everything else in between. I did get several comments about the Yamaha but they were all positive. Here are a few pics to keep you interested.

My ride is a 2009 Yamaha V-star 1100.

Coming into town

Main street. It went on like this for miles. Yes parking your bike in the city of Sturgis was a nightmare

As far as this being a wild ass party I can say that it's true. There is plenty of partying to be done if thats your thing but we didn't drive 1300 miles to get drunk and look at titties, Could have done that at the local strip club. The total number of baron boobs I saw on this trip is ZERO. There are lots of bars with pretty girls too look at and of course we did indulge some but anyplace with a liquor licence also has a very strict policy against nudity and leaving with open containers of alcohol. Walking down main street there are tons of police officers regulating these things as well. All of the really wild partying goes on at the camp grounds because they are all private property and BYOB, no cops, everything goes. If you are looking for trouble then the camp grounds are the place to be, if not then they are very easy to avoid. We chose not venture into them, but did get close enough to say that there is no way in hell I would consider staying in one. Ill take my over priced hotel any day. What you did see around town was shirtless women with pasties on (nipple covers) and ladies that were painted. A few examples.

The real reason for the Sturgis rally is the black Hills National Forest, It is absolutely beautiful. The roads are up & down in elevation and twist and turn like spaghetti noodles in a bowl with amazing scenery. I regret not having a Go Pro camera, it would have been some great footage. We pulled over and took pics several times but the don't do it justice. You really need to ride these roads to understand. You could easily spend days riding around and not see the same thing twice.

We rode to Mount Rushmore, it was about 30 miles or so, Definitely worth seeing.

My buddy with the statues over his head, we call him big Bobby.

About 110 miles from our hotel and across the border to Wyoming was Devils Tower. A big ass all natural rock just sticking out of the ground in the middle of no where.

Ladies there selling beer

This was at the Crazy Horse Monument. It is still under construction, so far its just a face carved into the mountain but still wort seeing.

This is the historical town of Deadwood, made famous by the murder of Wild Bill in Saloon number 10.

My other buddy

2 blocks down from saloon number 10, I guess he didn't make it far.

Once everything was said and done we logged approximately 850 miles of riding in 5 days. The riding & site seeing is what the Sturgis Black Hills Rally is really all about. We got up early every morning, ate some quick breakfast and hit the road. I ended up with 22 T-shirts, 14 can cooler cozies, a bottle of Wyoming Whiskey and a ton of memories.

On to the fun stuff. Here is the Full Throttle, famous for big name concerts and for reality TV. I wasn't impressed, we didn't stay long.

Free Bikini bike wash, girls work for tips but always a long line?

Spent several hours at the Beaver bar, this was my favorite bar in Sturgis, and my favorite bar tender!

Same girl, other side

Her & her friend

Young girls getting coated in baby oil before a wrestling match

They auctioned off the oil wrestling, these old dudes were paying $100 plus to wrestle these girls

Thats about all (that I'm willing to share)

Ah, damn man. Looks like there's more fun than could be had in a whole week!

I've been to the Black Hill NF, and it's nice.

It was a week long trip but we where only there for 5 days and really could have stayed longer. Unfortunately the drive there and back took a solid day each way. It was also getting down right expensive. Nothing is cheap during Rally week!

Nice! I need to get an air brush set.

Exactly what I was thinking..... Looks like a great trip though.

That guy was making money! The front of his shirt said "I dont want to be your boyfriend, I just want to paint your tits" The back said "its my business doing pleasure with you" lol

You really dont need your own air brush set, you can just sit there and watch him work all day.

Awesome Rob! Looks like a total blast!

Are they still working on Crazy Horse? Any estimate on when it will be done?

I'd have whiplash by the end of the trip looking at all the fine young ladies and their lack of clothing. lol

Yes they are still working on Crazy Horse but have a LONG WAY to go. Here is a model of what it will look like when complete.

The new Street Glides are nice. One of my buddies has stopped in a couple times and checked them out. I'm pretty sure he will end up with it before the year is out.

Agreed but holy shit they are expensive. Ill be looking for something a couple years old with low miles. It will probably be next year anyway.

The Yamaha has been really good to me, only thing that really bothers me about it is that it lacks an overdrive gear so it runs high RPMs down the highway. I am not particularly set on a HD and will give the Victory's a good look before I buy but what ever it is will be a bagger.

Looks like fun, I'll go one of these days.

Here is my ride
