Overland use of Solar Panels

There has been a few discussions about solar panels in other threads; but hopefully we can get the solar talk centralized here. I have said before I do not understand the love affair so many people have with an expensive, low out put, sporadic power source such as solar panels.

Finally; I am not the only one.

Overland Skills: Make Power or Store Power, Which is Best for You?

So what am I missing or is there a magic bullet for making solar work when I need the renewable power the most - at night?

I want a solar set-up if I ever end up with a roof rack. Something that can keep a battery charged during the day without the engine running (thinking while at a campsite maybe?). Then come night time you have a fully charged battery to last through the night to power your camp lights, fridge and chargers. Seems like good piece of mind knowing you don't have to rely only on an alternator.

That's Mr Asshole to you
Just get some Goal Zero stuff so you can be cool.
I am now thinking more about a dual battery for the fridge and some USB plugs. I probably wont be taking any long trips for several months so I have time to figure it out. Even if I do nothing my Odyssey battery has been a champ.

Solar Panels is probably the dumbest thing you can add to a truck, hydrogen fuel cells is the way to go.

Nope. Pretty easy.

#1) Avoid lead acid batteries at all costs
#2) Avoid crappy inefficient converters at all costs
#3) Go LION
#4) Get panels with most up to date charging capabilities (Qualcomm 3.0 or higher)

Enjoy power.

May not like the name of the source, but they know what works This portable solar charger is big enough to be your emergency home power source

Now that I stopped working there as of 2 months ago I will post a link - check it out....there is a specific reason the first thing you see is the 100,000+ sqft of solar when you clink the link Home - McGRORY GLASS

100% Net Zero energy consumption in a fabricating facility that contains two electronic glass tempering furnaces (very freaking HOT big ass ovens)

Solar paid for itself within 5 years - next 25 will be profit. Magic bullet is getting the electrical company to pay you for electricity you make as much as they charge you for electric. Obviously there will be a difference, btut he closer they are to being the same number the more feasible it is to do this for a "On-grid" location.
