Recovery Gear - basic and advanced

Recovery gear seems to be an after thought topic for a lot of people. What does everyone carry as basic gear and then the more advanced gear when they expect to be doing some crazy recoveries. I always try to keep at least one strap and a couple of shackles in my rig. Yesterday I picked up a soft shackle and will carry it as a replacement for one of my shackles. As of right now I do not have any "advanced" gear like a winch or snatch blocks.

So lets see what everyone carries and why they carry it.

@TacoXpo what gear to do you take on your trips for recovery?

@Anathollo and @thekidcatcher what gear did you both makes sure to have for recovery on your recent Moab and Colorado trip?

@TKGN1 when you are guiding people around that you do not know really well?

Trying to round out all the bases.

That's Mr Asshole to you
Based on some of my last few trips, moving trees out of the road way has become a theme. Most of the time a strap and a few shackles is all that is needed for a recovery or to remove a tree from the road.
Earlier this year multiple trees fell over the road and a winch, straps, snatch block, shackles, chain saw, sledge, and large axe were all needed to clear it.
I am thinking about storing a strap and a few shackles in my truck and then leaving the recovery bag at home unless I expect to need it.

My list of shit that I take.
1. I make sure my winch works before any trip @Anathollo
2. Always have my hilift. Bitches are afraid of them but it has saved my ass and other individuals @Anathollo
3. I have the 2 shackles that are always mounted to my truck so they are always there but I wouldn't leave without them
4. Tree saver strap and a tow strap that is about 20 25 foot long.
5. Tool box that I know I can take anything apart on the truck with. It really isn't that many tools but I have mastered removing my cv's with a nail and a prybar.
6. Essential fluids and JB weld.

I think that is about but I will add stuff if I remember.

I never go out alone but I always have in my truck:

Basic tools
Gloves
Tree saver
Tow strap
Recovery strap
Multiple shackles
Snatch block
Hitch mount recovery point
Tire patch kit
Axe
Hatchet
Air compressor
Flashlight
Water
Tent
Blankets
Back pack with clothes and essentials (modified for winter vs summer)
Matches

Additional things I take when I'm offroad/expo

Hi-Lift
Shovel
Radios
Batteries
Jump pack
Food stuffs
Various truck fluids

Depending on how far/where I'm going I'll take spare parts.

I check my winch often to make sure it's working and the line is in good condition.

If I think of other stuff I'll add it on.

Pretty much this. I'll add

7. Couple of 4"x4" posts maybe 8" long for use as a base for the hi-lift or wheel chocks if you need them.

8. If you drive a 2nd gen tacoma, a spare wheel bearing. This is a MUST!

And @thekidcatcher , you do some sketchy shit with a hi-lift....just sayin....safety first brobeans

Shovel
60" hi lift with hilift winch/wheel accessory pack
hilift base
at least 60' of 30,000lb strap
tree saver
wheel chocks
medium sized tool bag of basic hand tools
no spare parts except U joints/fan belt/pulleys
assortment of shackles in different sizes.

That's the minimum Ill go out with and Ive never needed more on solo runs. Group runs I always need more because Ill push more limits.

When I am expecting some trouble I try to take a second recovery strap. Last year at Jambo we ended up using one to secure a truck to a tree so as the truck could winch people up the steeper trails when needed.

Wheel chocks. You mean rocks or pieces of wood right?

Nope. $7 rubber chocks from Harbor freight. One of the most overlooked 4x4 safety items that can prevent a slow crushing death. Very important IMO, especially when your breaking rule #1 and driving solo like I always used to. (4) chocks never leave my truck. They aren't huge.

One of the guys I know who's always working on his trucks had a diesel pusher jump gears and crush him last year. Spent hrs trapped before he was found then spent the next few months in a medically induced coma. Not cool. $7 in safety items and 60 seconds of setting them up could of prevented all that.

I just read the article. They are calling it a freak accident and blaming Jeeps "hard to read" gear shifters. When will people take responsibility for their own actions instead of blaming others. It's not a freak accident nor is Jeep to blame. The guy who crawled under his truck while parked on a slope with no form of PPE is at fault. Sucks he died, but we have all known about gravity for a while now so it shouldn't be surprising so many people

I wonder if he was wearing a red shirt when it happened?
