What you and I do in private is no one's business
thats a long shopping list.
It's my "hit list"

thats a long shopping list.
Did some homework, below are my options.. thoughts?
Options:
1. ARB Locker Front and rear, Nitro Gears 5.29 front and rear w/ARB compressor $3,050.00
2. ARB Locker in the rear, Nitro Gears 5.29 front and rear w/ARB compressor $2,200.00
3. ARB Locker in the rear, 4.10 gears w/ compressor. - $1,585.00
4. Send my 3rd in, and have him rebuild it with NITRO gears/ new seals & bearings. Replace the front gear ratio at the same time (4.88). $1180.00 w/5 year warranty
5. Grizzly Locker w/ nitro gears (rear only) 4.10 $1095.00
6. Send my 3rd in, and have him rebuild it with NITRO gears/ new seals & bearings. $580.00 w/5 year warranty
in closing.. it sounds like breaking an OEM 4.10 is rare. The fact I have done it twice in two months makes me think I am doing something wrong in the setup. I think the smartest thing is to send the broken one to ECGS and let them rebuild it right. While it is there though, should I spend the extra $600.00 and change the gear ratio. I am not made of money and this is going to kill my 4 corners budget. oh and, after all of this.. I get a 5 year warranty, so breaking another one is someone else's problem.. :woot:

nicely done Mauzer, beware your build thread...![]()

Yeah mauzer. Sam finds some random ass shit! Im not looking forward to the shit Sam's about to post![]()

The Tacoma/T100/Tundra model has several upgrades from the older 8” including a larger pinion shank diameter and main-bearing cap girdle (see above picture), which reduces deflection (deflection is a leading cause of ring & pinion failure). Source
Most people are reluctant to really crank down on the side adjusters in their differential. Attaining a good preload through the side adjusters can be critical in protecting your differential from the high torque loads that cause ring gear deflection. It is not uncommon to torque side adjusters to 150-200 ft/lbs when setting up a differential. Source
In reading, and asking.. I have a good idea why my Ring gear failed my twice. I think there was too much deflection under load because it happened when I was climbing an obstacle on both occasions. The first time, it knocked out one tooth and the second.. all of them almost. Probably because I kept backing up and trying the same obstable despite the noise.
Torquing the adjusters after locker install would have probably prevented this. I returned the adjusters to the same marked position, but didn't even check how tight it was or rolling resistance of the carrier. Interestingly, I have read that the 8" toyota diff has a history of this weakness in deflection which is why they went to 8.4" diff on the Tacoma/T100/Tundra model.

One more reason I'm glad I have a T100 axle under mine
I'm still a big believer that gear set up has a big impact on how long gears will last. For example, I installed 4.56 on my longtravel F150 which spent quite a bit of time airborn out on the desert with sudden tire traction forces from landing and never broke a tooth. These were cheap genuine gears from 4WheelParts. However my buddy with a smaller truck (F150 ext cab vs F150 supercrew) and same engine broke his ring gear pulling out of an In and out Burger, upon removal I measured his backlash and it was .028, .011 over spec. What I'm saying you can have the best rear end set up but if the specs are off, it won't last long.
Just my opinion, I have set up quite a few rear ends and none have failed yet besides making noise from to much of a deep ratio.

So how long till you kill another window

Nice, you had limited flares right? I want to tear mine off too. Any plans to cover the holes?
You know.... if Sam had a trail rig. Like an older 4Runner on 37's.![]()
