Sub and Amp

I'm looking into getting a sub and amp around christmas time. I know nothing about amps or subs so I'm completely lost. All I care about is sound quality. I don't care about the guy three cars behind me at the stop light hearing it. I'd like to keep sub and amp around $500-$600 but I don't even know if that's possible. I don't mind spending more if there's a big difference in quality but that's just what I'm throwing out as a starting point. Throw around suggestions for me and tell me things to look for.

I think Andy is selling a pretty decent amp right now

A lot will be determined by the amount of space you are willing to give up. But a single sub in a small box properly installed will sound good. If you are going to DIY then you can start with one of these https://www.soundoffaudio.com/item.cfm/id/2105 or https://www.soundoffaudio.com/item.cfm/id/2206 I'd recommend fiberglassing the inside of either before you install it. I have this same brand and its pretty flimsy as it comes from them. I pulled the carpet and fiberglassed the thing inside and out. A little bit of effort but it paid off in the end. They are a good start for a DIY setup. Still maintains some storage in the rear. You can also go with Mr Marv's boxes, very nice but a little more $$. I can vouch for the Pioneer Premier line of shallow mount subs. Not too much $$. I have two 12's and anyone who's sat in my truck recently can probably attest to how they sound. But driven by a good quality amp should do the trick. I have a single Alpine PDX 1.600 powering my subs, its really about 750 watts into them and they get loud enough to hurt your ears but yet they are very clean.. very tight.

Shouldn't you get a locker & sliders instead? LOL

I also know nothing about subs or amps so nothing to add on that.

Thanks for the insight Sean. That second box looks perfect of what I'd like to do. I'm going to look into those Pioneer subs.

My sliders are ready to go on just waiting for a day when me and my dad are both off so we can get them installed. And the locker will come at Christmas time also. Locker will be a gift to myself and the amp and sub are coming from "Santa".

So what would happen if I had more airspace than what the sub manufacturer suggests? Loss of quality? Loss of volume? Rattles?

Depends on how much more.. but generally it would be a little muddy. Not as clear, probably a loss of volume as well. No rattles.

One thing I forgot to mention, if your box has too much volume, you can always fill it with something.. like wood, to cut down on the amount of volume it has.

Nothing wrong with that one. What box are you planning to use?

A single or a double?

Also, if you don't need a shallow mounting depth sub, don't buy one. They are not as efficient as a standard sub. SO... if you can use deeper sub.. get it.

Good to know. It seems shallow mounts are also more expensive.
