What I dont have:

Headunit Done Apline CDA 105

Subs

Sub box

The rear storage bins from behind the second seat. I took them out a while back and my dad must have chunked them

What I do have:

Amps a JL 500/1 and 300/4

Stinger distribution blocks/ RCA's, misc power and grounding wire

Raamat Sound deadener

Alpine Type R SPR17-C 6 1/2" components for the front and 2 way 6 1/2" for the rear

Mr Marv speaker rings

Parts to check out:

Soundoff audio sub boxes Just need to decide if I want a single or dual sub setup. I have run JL and Orion Subs in the past and really want to go JL again

I got rid of the Kenwood Double Din HU that I had. A buddy wanted it worse than me :)

I'll probably pick up an Alpine CDA-105 from a friend 3 sets of RCA's and other decent funtions to ease the wiring up a little.

I have the Scoche DD face mounting plate but will need one for a single DIN HU. Done

I will deaden the fuck outta this thing before anything is installed. Rattles bug the shit out of me.Rear done

I know some of you are running the Pioneer and Fosgate shallow mounts, But Id rather stick to a somewhat standard depth sub or figure out some way to make and 8W7 work in a downfiring orientation.

Ideally, I need to find someone who is getting rid of their stuff (possibly over there) and maybe I could find a deal.

What are yalls thoughts on converting the under storage compartments to speaker enclosures?

I just wanted some suggestions from the guys here and if yall se any deals link them to this thread so I can check them out

Personally. I would go listen to a good set of shallow mounts. Its not BOOM wake the neighborhood... but its a crisp detailed boom.. and it is loud. While a 8W7 doesn't require a lot of space.. its HUGE.. thing is as long as it it wide... like my Johnson BTW. lol Anyhow.. you have the amps and components.. get a headunit that has good clean outputs with high voltage (4v or better). Look at the Alpine shallow mounts or the JL TW5 series (Pioneer dumped the Premier line and the replacements are stupid $$). I contemplated replacing my Premiers with the Alpines but I can't justify the cost.. not to mention I was only going to do it because I "thought" they might sound better.. never heard a pair. My Premiers sound pretty fucking good. A few folks on here can attest to that. But I also supplement the mid-bass with some 8's in the doors which does help with that mid range punch to the throat. The JL TW5's are a great speaker.. but they are not cheap.. a single 13W5 behind the seat would be pretty awesome.. 2 would be even better.

Honestly shallow mounts are the way to go in a tacoma. You dont have much space to work with. Unless you like bass that rattles the truck apart, shallow mounts will satisfy your bass needs. Hell you can swing by and listen to my the system if you want. Check craigslist out. Ppl are getting rid of great systems for next to nothing. That's where I just got my 4 channel amp.
As for the headunit, Sean was pretty much dead on. Don't skimp out on a cheap headunit.

And as for Seans system. Damn. That's all I need to say.

One other thing.. the box. I bought a box off the web from Sound Off Audio... it was SHIT!! Complete crap.. but it fit perfectly. They just used cheap MDF, no real glue that I could see and no screws, only small brads. Anyhow, it sounded like shit. I pulled it out.. made some modifications to the center section for my amps, removed their shitty speaker terminals and then liquid nailed the shit out of it on the inside. Then I predrilled holes and used wood screws on all the seams.. finally I fiberglassed the shit out of it. Multiple layers of fiberglass and cloth.. inside and out. Sanded it all down, painted it and then put some vinyl over it. Thing is as hard as chunk of granite.. and NO rattles. It seriously helped out in the sub department.

There is a guy over there that put 4, 8" subs under his back seat. His name is Italianstylin and has an audio company of some kind. It's a very clean install and sounds great. I think he fiberglassed that entire compartment and made a very nice overlay painted to match the truck.
You might want to see if a local shop will make you a box. I have heard the difference between a good and bad box and you don't want bad.

That looks a a pretty viable option. I really wnat 10's but 2 8's could be cool

I would stick with 10's. That guy, Italianstyln, has 4 8" under the back seat. Hell Sean has two 8" pioneers in his front door. I doubt two 8" will give you the bass you want.

I really dont need too much bass....

Just something better than the factory crap. I am going to start with the headunit, sound deadening, and speaker replacement. Wire up the 4ch for the mids and highs and run the wiring for the Mono amp then deal with the Subs.

Are the shallow ones the way to go? dont really know how much depth I have to work with. My system in my 02 took up the whole access cab. It wasnt comfy back there anyways.

Here are some pics of it

If you want to keep it stealth (no box on the seat) then you are limited to about 5.5" of mounting depth. Larger diameter magnets will effect that number. I had some 10" Image Dynamic ID10's behind there and I had to have the box made with an extended mounting depth, basically they cheaped out and used thinner material where the magnet goes. A good shallow mount sub is pretty impressive. I head over to your local JL dealer and see if you can listen to something they installed a 13W5 in. It will fit back there. I'd also give Mr Marv a call an see about having him build you a box. But I wouldn't try to fit 8's under the rear seat. Good gimmick and if I owned a car stereo shop I might do it just to show people it can be done.. but not in my personal ride. A sealed 12 with a good amp that can control it and make it hit is the way to go IMO.

I love that 02.. I wanted a access cab with the 'stepside" bed. Somebody at my bank has a silver TRD 4x4 version just like that.

i have heard the 13w5 Very nice indeed. I am a fan of JL as well.

I should have never got rid of that 02. Appreciate the help Sean.

I am with Sean on going with a bigger sub. If I were to do a system in my truck I would try to keep it stealth. Shallow mount 10 or 12 behind the back seat and a 5 channel alpine amp behind the other back seat.

That 02 is awesome. I saw one that same color with a 6" lift the other week. The stepside really sets it apart.
