I trust new builds that I live a mile from and can monitor like a hawk.

Finally rekeying the house. It had all new locks when I bought it but the garage door, front door, and back door all had different keys. Got sick of keeping up with what key went to what. Bought KwikSet Smartkey locks for all three doors so I can key them all to the same key.

So all my old locks were Schlage. They were absolute trash compared to the new locks. Should have upgraded a lot sooner. The new ones use much heavier components and hardware. And I like that they include longer screws from the factory to reach all the way to the studs behind the frame. Also the bolts that hold the Schlage deadbolts were probably half the thickness of the ones holding the KwikSet deadbolts together. Glad I finally got around to swapping them all out. And it's nice to have one key that can open everything again.

Go around your house and put in 3" wood screws on your strike plates.

I bought one of these on sale and love it. Way more convenient than having to get your keys out everytime.

We have one of those smart locks on the door from the garage to the house. It ties in with out home security system. When you unlock it the security system disarms. I want to get another for the front door as well.

That's what the new locks have is the 3" screws for the strike plates. I thought about one of those smart locks but found it unnecessary for the time being.

Yeah I was really on the fence about it but after having one, it's totally worth the money. Makes daily stuff like walks with the dog or kiddo way easier since I don't need to worry about having my keys.

I sell locks and 'security' items but if you still have it and want to lose the perception of safety locks give some people I'd suggest starting here... this guy is an animal and when I started watching his videos it was a real eye opener. LockPickingLawyer

Not sure where I first heard it many many years ago, but it still applies today... "locks only keep honest people out"

Reinforced strikes and screws that go into the studs should be common practice on any home and it's sad they are not. I also prefer a door that swings out so they can't be kicked in as easily.
