Decided to get a game knife for the July hunt. The MSRP is about double what they can be found for sale on other websites and Amazon. It has a nice balance and good grip to it. I am looking forward to testing it out prior to July.

Did you have any issues with the handles absorbing blood or fluids?
Mine haven't been exposed to blood. They just stay with my camping stuff. I have other knives I use for cleaning animals. But my Esee knives have the blaze orange G10 handles so it wouldn't be a problem anyway. Not sure how the micarta will be, never owned a knife with micarta handles.

Ordered a camera this morning that will be here tomorrow and going this afternoon to pick up a Lamco 600lb feeder. Getting everything ready so I can go setup as soon as my leg will let me. Hopefully the doctor has some good news tomorrow and it's nothing too serious.

My wife got me a set of Gerber cleaning knives when I started getting more into hunting. I have been happy with them for the most part. The blade doesn't hold its edge like I'd hope, but I was mostly using it to clean hogs if they were a good size. It held better with deer. Pretty sure that would be the case with any knife though.

Worst case the handles are replaceable if needed.

@CowboyTaco - hoping the other shooter going brings his standard butcher kit. Will get more info this month though.

Thankfully I do not have a wood saw; but I would not be opposed to buying a portable bandsaw for this as an excuse. lol

As long as the skin is removed, a sawzall with a demo blade works wonders lol

That depends on which processor.

I went to pull out my knives and clean the deer we shot at my wife's boss's ranch in Coleman, TX. He asked what I was doing and said that the processor only charged $5 extra to take the whole deer as opposed to just the quarters. Easy call to let them do the dirty work.

When at my grandpa's place, I'd always skin and quarter. I'd take the 4 quarters to the processor and cut up the backstrap at home.

Calling the processor in that town to confirm prices / processes. If it is cheap enough will probably just field gut and let them do the work.

Processor we used to use before he closed shop charged the same whether it was quartered or just gutted. But he was $$$ to begin with. Have never seen anyone else that put out that quality of meat though. Wish he was still open. We've tried several popular places in the area after he closed shop and they've all been disappointing in someway or another when compared to his shop.

They are the professionals and I would rather not waste axis meat on a learning curve. I will gladly do that on cheaper deer. It has been an easy 20 years since I fully butchered anything. When I was living with my parents we raised & butchered chickens and pigs. Then hunted & processed deer plus the occasional emu back when the big bird crash happened.

If I'm not within 30 min of my house I'd farm it out too.
Was thinking of that Nelgi hunt I missed out on that was bow only. Part of that was field dressing and packing out your own kill or at least getting it back to the ranger station to dress it out, but you did have to do it there. If you wanted to use the hide for a mount you had to leave it there in "quarantine" because of some mites or some shit. Then get it after 3 days? Anyway, it was a bunch of shit to put up with in order to do the hunt, but worth it.
