USB Powered Camping

I just bought a RTT and I'm excited to go test this thing out. As I lay on the comfy mattress inside my Tepui tent setup inside the garage like a 5 year old child, I started thinking about how this damn tent is really like a mini hotel (it's that comfy). So my mind wandered to other amenities a hotel (or house) would normally have too. A lot of those amenities boiled down to one thing in particular....electricity.

Sure, you could bring a small generator but those are expensive and often overkill for most of what is needed. So I started thinking about power sources and connectivity. One thing that homes have really nailed down is the aspect of having a common receptacle for all things 120V AC. Now, seeing as how we're not getting 120AC without a beefy inverter (also incurring power loss) I needed to look for another widely accepted standard.

And then it hit me....USB

USB is one of the most widely accepted power standards in the world. Even other countries that utilize different AC power standards still use USB. What's great is as long as it's normal USB on one side, it could be micro, mini, or even USB type C on the other end. Sure, you're only working with 5V and somewhat low amperage, but it's plenty for a LOT of things.

So this thread is about figuring out what types of things you can do with USB as a power source as it relates to camping and other stuff.

First off.....the power source I'm starting with (for now) is an EC Technology power bank. It's 22,400mAh and has 3 USB ports able to yield 2.4A to each device. It also has a little LED flashlight on it. Nice. In case these numbers don't make sense to you, your phone has a battery about 2,000-3,000mAh inside of it. So this baby can charge your phone from totally dead about 8 times. Sweet. The fact that it's removable and can be charged inside the truck is a HUGE bonus. USB powered lights? Hell yeah. Charge your phone in the tent whilst you sleep? You know it. Here's a link to the power bank.

I found a LOT of LED light strips that will work out perfectly for what I need. I decided I needed light in two major areas. Inside the tent for getting shit ready for bed and also outside the entrance of the tent for exiting when having to piss in the middle of the night. The first link below shows a little 1.5ft LED strip. I just received it in the mail and it's VERY bright. It can be cut to length too. Super flexible almost like it's made of rubber. I also got the 6 foot version in the second link so I could wrap the exterior of the RTT base and project light onto the camp site. Nothing worse than walking face first into a spider web when you're dying to piss and totally sleep disoriented.

They also sell USB switches that you can use to toggle a USB device on or off. I'm thinking those will be helpful as I get this project going. More to come. Very interested in ideas that people have! It would be cool to get a running list of neat shit we find that can be powered by USB.

I like it. The RTT I ordered has LED lighting and USB outlets already built in, I am not sure what the power source is though.

I bought some cheap USB powered "bulbs" that look like a regular light bulb but have a hook on them with a power switch. Might be nice to have to allow you to move it where you need it. I bought it for my daughter when she went to visit grandparents last year. Allowed her to just clip it on her headboard and she could read at night or just leave it on.

Also check out Lumminoodle. I have a couple of them and they are pretty slick. Amazon also has a knock off brand of them.

Pretty sure this could solve 2/3 of my "house battery" problems for RTT camping. I ordered a battery and LED lights for my RTT and will post pics once setup. One of the options I have been looking over is USB powered fans for inside the tent. I sleep better with a fan on me plus it helps when camping.

I like your idea.

I know I'm an asshole, but it must be said. When I'm camping I'd like to sneak up at about 3am and slaughter anyone in their sleep who has a generator running throughout the day or night. Keep that stuff to the RV park. No one in the woods wants to hear that noise. Camped last year at Rousche Creek and one of the guys had his genny running non-stop. By the end of the trip I hated him and was very close to pissing in it's gas tank. If your in the middle of know where by yourself - sure. if I'm within earshot - I H8 you.

That Luminoodle product looks pretty cool. Kinda the same thing but with more features. Solid product for sure.

And Zech, I really like your idea with the fan. Genius. Good for white noise and also for keeping it cool in the tent!

Concur with the Luminoodle. Got their light rope and one of their battery packs in my Cairn subscription box. It does a great job lighting up the tent. I'll need to consider some fan options as well.

Time to spend money on Amazon. Can I just have my paycheck direct deposited to them?

Very nice. I put a cigarette/dual usb plug on the outside of my toolbox of the 2nd battery. Cigarette port powers the selectable red or white led strips along the top support bars and then the two usb ports are used to charge whatever overnight. Have fun with it! Put a pole in it?

In case anyone is looking for a nice USB socket this one seems great. I'm considering mounting one in the bed actually. Right next to the power outlet. It's marine grade so it has some water resistance and a cover built in. Would make it VERY easy to run a USB extender up to the tent so you could actually charge the tent battery back whilst driving. It would be equally good inside the cab too. 2.4A per socket is no joke!

I have that same one in the bed of my truck, its pretty durable. Its been back there since before 2012 and it still works. Its right below a 12v outlet from the same company.

Eidt.. actually mine is most likely the older non 2.4a unit. Might have to upgrade. :)

Shore power. It's a plug for the 4 amp NOCO battery maintainer. Keeps my batteries topped off when it sits in the garage and the fridge is running.

I have that USB charger in my switch panel. The only thing I do not like is the one I purchased was not the higher charging rate.

Good quality. Ive had a few of them for some time. Friends have them in their boats and motorcycles with no issues Ive heard of besides the green light that never goes off. One of my buddies who hates light took it apart and deleted the light.

Edit: Just realized the model you listed doesn't have the parasitic draining lights. Wish I had those ones.
