What have you done to your ride lately?

I have been talking with All-Pro in the hopes that they make something similar for the 2nd Gen trucks. I would love to run a rack system like freeze but I need the flexibility to pull it out at anytime or shorten it. Freezes rack bolts into the bed via the bed bolts, and can only be removed by removing the bolts. There is another guy in the club that has the same rack but has a quick release system that lets him pull it out so he can fit in his sled. What I want is a rack that can hold gear, can be broken down when needed and can be stored in parts in the bed, or in a small storage box.

If your going to take a crack at building one of these, I might have to make a trip down to Texas and get one off you!

I like the idea of a quick release system that breaks down into a bag or something. Thats cool! I also think it would be cool to have the sides replaceable so that you can make it low (bed rail height) or high (cab height)... or any thing really. Just swap center sections on the side supports.

I was thinking along the same lines... Maybe something that was hinged and would lay down flat while wheeling but would allow you to 'pop it up' to get to your stuff and to set the tent up.

Sean, I will see you later tonight....

That sounds a lot like those old kid tents that had the plastic poles with the connectors, and then you would just throw a blanket or something over it.

I know the thought behind Freeze's rack was that it wouldn't stick up higher then the cab, which would reduce the drag on his truck while driving to and from the trails. Its made with about 3 inch tube, so it is super strong, and it is also set up to run attachments on the crossmembers

If the rack was a little shorter (length wise) that the bed you could make it go up and down. Maybe have a small hydro cylinder to assist in raising and lowering.

Something like this.

Red indicates the top of the rack (can be anything). Blue is the side supports which are hinged at the top and bottom. Green is the mount to your bedrail and orange is the hydro cylinder. Check these Paint skills!

That would be cool! Even a lever that you insert the handle for the hi-lift handle in.

That would be cool! I just wonder if it would be sturdy enough. I suppose with some high quality heim joints for hinges and a sturdy base it could be. Another issue would be mounting a RTT to it.. not sure on the length of the RTT but it probably takes up the whole length of a shortbed and eliminates the ability to lift like that. Maybe a scissor action would be better. Straight up or down?

You could make it the same size as the bed if the bolts that hold the blue ones were mounted in something that could slide.

True! I was just trying to make it work with my tire gate.. but that would also work.

And that's why I am thinking a fixed one, just above my tire might work. Something tells me the first one I make will be scraped sometime in the near future!? :)

man, you guys get an idea and run with it! love the idea of the retractable system Sean. I know a few of us up here were throwing around the idea with a Toneau cover having it on a system like hood struts so that the cover could lift up to provide a sheltered sleeping area in the bed of the truck, but if you could do it with a rack and hydro cylinders that would be one amazing system.
