What have you done to your ride lately?

When I worked at Oreilly in high school I would always bench test the alternators to prevent selling a shitty one. The odds were not very good for how many we sent back with out even selling them.

The rebuilders must work for the car salesmen.

Got the s/c housing back from the shop today. The guy spent most of the afternoon and morning getting the old bearings out and then machining a tool to seat the new bearings to spec. I'll give him full credit - only charged the quoted amount. Now to put it all back together and make this mother run again.

The one I just replaced lasted 4 years. This new one probably won't make that lol

Let me know how that alternator install goes Michael. I like that one as well. But I read that Mechman is actually the Mfg of the Tough Truck line. As you know the Mechman has a smaller pulley and requires a different serp belt. Hope its not the same deal with the TT line.

Rebuild companies suck. I wonder if they have ever heard of a quality program? I had one on the 7 that lasted about a week before it burned up. Had to pay close to $500 for a new one but no regrets.

Speaking of which, that car is worth anywhere from $4k to 9k these days. Amazing to think when 10 years ago it cost about $80k. I still enjoy it as a daily driver and think I can get another 50k to 100k out of it. I know they are notorious for a cooling tube failure in the middle of the engine and that is a ticking time bomb. Its about a 10 hour job with about $2k in parts. I will still do that one but if the tranny goes, I guess I will part out what I can. :) Maybe I could SAS it! lol

$4-9k? That's crazy.

Yeah it is. If you don't mind the work and order parts on line, it's a hell of a $5k car! lol And just to be clear, this is the only thing I've had to do to it for 100k:

* What they call the motor mount oil leak - 10 hours and $2 in parts
* Just recently, belts, hoses, water pump, pulleys - ~$400
* Tires - I use the highest milage tires I can find
* Brakes - last 50k after I got rid of the crappy OE pads (never changed rotors and still no run out)
* Oil/Air filter every 10k
* Window dealibob - about $200 and 2 hours to install (I used OEM but I think it may be failing again)
* I chose to put the 760 wheels on it - $800 + $400 for powder coating
* Expansion tank ~$100

and at 17 mpg - blows my truck's mileage away, sound system that is phenomenal, sound deading to the point you could plow a crowd of Obama voters and not here one whine, comfort/air conditioned seats, too bad it's not a 4wd truck. :)

I probably won't get rid of it. It's paid off. I'm just really digging the new 4Runners. My cousin just got one and it's really making me want one. But then I'd have a car payment. And that's no fun.

Grasshopper. Wait. :) Or save up for it and pay cash. It is a depreciating asset. You will thank me after you buy a home... I promise. :) They are nice. I drool on them when I see them but it is a trap! :)

Yeah; I wish I had not got back into car payments for this '01 4Runner but I saw a rock and a hard place coming up with my wife's Neon I wanted to avoid.

Only 35 payments to go but hopefully I can double up on payments.

Supercharger is back together and on the 4Runner. The middle bolt on the intake did not tighten up like it should have but it is running pretty solid so I will hash it out later.

Yep! My mom had a 2004 X5 for 11 years. Barely any problems with it. Loved that car. She just got a 2015 X5. I can't believe how amazing that car is...
