Putting this in here for future reference, planning on a diy rear bumper in the future and this is a nice simple example:
3x3 .120 wall
2'x4' 1/8" plate
1' of receiver tube

My total spent on the build was $80

I boxed the sides and added some extra supports. It turned out really stout. The legs that attach the sides are 1.5" .120 wall dom its all i had laying around. I also finished the receiver.

here it is all painted and waiting on me to finish the frame mounts:

and here is the finished product. NO TIRE RUBBING EVEN AT FULL STUFF

Im really happy with it. the welds all turned out good for using a stick welder. Im proud

And another idea w/ tiregate:

attachment.php

2x5 .180 square tube wall base
Rockstomper spindle (sleeve w/ 1.5" .120 wall tube)
.250 wall "legs"
2x2? 1/8" square tube for tire gate frame
Receiver tube for tire mount and hitch

It's all square tube, I think we could pull it off easy

Thats what I was thinking, with my limited fab skills I wanted something I could just "cut out" and have you weld the pieces...or I guess I should start learning to weld lol Either way I was thinking square tube would be the easiest and strongest. I'll need to get some plate too and build some quarter panel protection.

Picked up the CBI bumper from Chris Saturday but Drew had skipped town on me so I didn't get it installed (hi buddy). I removed my stocker and tried to cut the front frame plates but all I had was an 18v cordless recip and it wasn't really up to the task. So I masked the front and painted everything satin black, I think I'm going to go buy an angle grinder on my lunch break and try to get after it tonight.

The only problem now is that my fiance's great grandmother passed away this weekend, rosary is today and funeral is tomorrow so not sure if I'll have time to cut the frame plates...hopefully I can get everything done in time for Longs on Saturday.

I'm available all week after tomorrow. You can come over every evening till the meet if you need to

I think I can do the bumper and most of the other stuff at my house, I may need you help doing the BL swap from mine to Angela's. Not sure how I'll get hers and mine there at the same time...maybe I can convince her to go to dinner with Mal and Christa this week and we can do it while they're out? Taking the bl off doesn't HAVE to be done before Longs but I'd like to try to.

That sounds like a really good plan

I'll talk to Mal and Ang and get the wheels turning...

Just went and bought a cheapo angle grinder from Harbor Freight for $12.99 and a 10 pack of cut off wheels. I'm off work tomorrow for the funeral so I may just pull a late night and hopefully get the bumper mounted tonight if not tomorrow. I need to go grab my oil drain pan from my parents to do my xfercase fluid, then hopefully go to Drew's sometime this week to do the bl and cv

Can't wait to see that bumper mounted. So I assume from reading that the plan is to pull the BL off of your runner so that the bumper will match up correctly and put it on Ang's?

What needs to be cut off for the bumper?

Yeah, she's wanted a little lift so she can run a bigger tire and this is the cheapest way (for me) to give her that...she's a total mallcrawler so it won't matter to her lol

The late model 3rd gens have plates welded on the end of the frame rails that need to be cut off to allow aftermarket bumpers to be mounted, they changed the front bumper mounting in 99 I think to include a crumple zone or some shit. Its referred to as the "fat lip" bumper, I think it started in 99 with the redesign of the front grille, etc.

Still no bumper

I cut off the excess plating around the frame rails but the bumper still won't fit, I need to cut the whole damn crumple zone out! And I need to either notch or relocate the "crossmember" that the stock skid bolts to...Going to Drew's tonight to see if we can get this thing mounted.

Changed the oil in my runner and my fiance's yesterday, still need to change my xfercase oil...among other things, before Saturday:cool:

The saga continues...

Went over to Drew's last night and we cut my frame and the "crossmember" off but the bumper still wasn't lining up, gonna have to finish it tonight.

My amateur grind job on the crossmember (shitty cell pics):
