South East Oklahoma Expedition Meet, June 17-19th

UPDATE*****5/11/11**** I just realized I planned this for Father's Day weekend. In order for me to go we will need to reschedule. Taking suggestions for dates.

I have done a lot of looking and it looks like there is a very large network of trails in the lower Ouachita Mountains in south east Oklahoma. It is called the K Trail and starts right by Lake Clayton and goes all the way to Arkansas.

There are several trails that branch off of K Trail and I was told that all of the trials to the south are legal. To go from Lake Clayton to Indian Highway takes about 6 hours of solid driving. We can explore other trails along the way and camp somewhere in between.

Another option is to keep heading east and we can end up at highway 259. If we choose to go all the way to 259 we will want to start on the trail sometime early Friday to make sure we have enough time to make it all the way through.
I am working on getting some other map together besides Google.

This is an expedition/camping type of trip and from what I understand the chances of body damage are minimal but still possible.

I am not sure if there are fishing opportunities but I am going to bring some tackle. After the trip I may stay 1 more night at Beavers Bend state park and do some trout fishing if anyone is interested you are welcome to join. I know this park and river VERY well and I can almost promise a nice stringer of rainbow trout.

A $25 land use permit is required and can be purchased at 1 of the grocery stores in Clayton. The K Trial is an old logging trail and the land is a combination of private land but mostly is a state game preserve.

Here are some links to some info and previous trips on the trial.

This weekend is not a set thing and can be altered if it will allow more of y'all to come.
It is about a 4 hour drive from my house in Arlington and think if we leave by 10:00am we should be good if we choose to go all the way to 259.

I have orientation for work at some point in June. But it will probably be during the week. So as long as I'm not working I'm down.

Been lurking on these forums a lot, but I got excited when I saw this. I'm going to be home on post-deployment leave around this time frame, and would love to join on this trip if it's cool with y'all!

Your welcome to join us. What rig will you be taking? Got any pics of that 85?

I'll be bringing my Tacoma, the Taco is a 4x4 as well, no locker though. The 85 isn't currently running, has no brakes, and generally wouldn't be safe for a 1500 mile drive across the country, haha. Here's a picture of the 85 as she currently sits, have a bunch of parts sitting at my buddies house in NC waiting to be put on though:

Bed is in bad shape, but it will be replaced with a flat bed eventually. As soon as something is actually done to her, I'll be putting a build page up. That won't be until after June most likely. Already have lockers, 5.29 gears, diff armor, new weber carb, and Marlins brake upgrade kit. Not sure which way to go with the suspension yet, but it'll either be trail gears 4" kit, or 63" chevies with trail gears 3" up front.

I like that. Your plans for gears and armor sound like a solid start.

Thanks, plan is to have that rig for rock crawling, or anything I don't want to risk breaking the taco on. Lot cheaper to get parts for the old 85 than for the 09! The taco will end up being the tow rig, daily driver, and somewhat of an expedition rig. Between the two of em, I have $2000 in parts sitting at random peoples houses throughout NC, and that's just the smaller stuff that doesn't take up to much room. Haven't even started ordering the big stuff...

I think we might be in for this. Need to wait till a little closer to see if anything work wise conflicts but Bianca is definitely on board. Who is leading this thing, do we have the route planned out & How is the weather at this time of year?

I have been the one doing some research. I talked to a guy that went on the trail about 3 years ago and got some good info. He is the one that told me about the $25 permit. I am going to call one of the stores to make sure they sell them. I am also going to call the clayton chamer of comerce to try and find out any info from them. We can meet at the park at lake Clayton.
As far as the beer we need to make very sure we get it here in Texas to avoid that crappy 3.2 garbage. The weather is usually warm this time of year but can get a little chilly at night if a front rolls through and from being at a little higher elevation. I have been in this part of several times during the summer and it can range from comfortable to hot and dry to humid.
