Have they improved quality over the first gens? I'd still have a hard time buying one.

Especially when superwinch has 50% off sales annually (if they still do).

I priced them years ago and a good superwinch on sale is similarly priced to a Smitty

I've had two Superwinch and never an issue with either. First one was the el' cheapo on the crawler and then the Talon. I like the Talon.

I tried to find some reviews of the Talon. When I bought it I had found several reviews... now I can't find shit. Did find the stupidest review.. shows its line speed spooling in... which is pretty damn fast. Way faster than the M8000 it replaced. 62 feet per minute vs 30 feet per minute.

The electrical connections are shitty pot metal electrical connections that should've NEVER been allowed inside a winch. Fucking drum rusted shut. Just an all around chinesium winch with a Superwinch sticker on it.

That's the Tigershark line, just above entry level winch. All drums rust, its just a fact.. its why you do periodic maintenance on the winch. I had my M8000 apart a few times to inspect things and re-grease it. Especially since you live near the coast with the humidity and salt air.

Well, I'm hopefully in the market for a winch soon. I've heard good things about the gen 2 smittys, but they also have a gen 3 out now. Figured I should be able to get a good deal on the older gen 2 model.

I think @tex had good things to say about his old Engo.

Yep, I didn't maintain it. I'm more pissed about the chinsy electronics in it.

He had a Superwinch I believe.

That's Mr Asshole to you
I had a superwinch in the Tacoma and never an issue. My Warn VR8000 has also been working great. Thought I had an issue with it not reversing line but it was just dirt in the plug.

Ive seen the internals of those H20 winches and when I saw the paper gaskets, yes paper as a gasket, I said hell no.

See if you can find the parts diagram and look for crappy parts before you buy one. Hopefully they have ungraded designs but for that low of a price I'm doubtful.

The nice thing about Warn is you know they will be around 5 years from now should you have issues or need parts + parts are easy to find should you break anything. Heck I got an aftermarket motor for mine because it was 1/2 price. Looking back that might not of been a good idea, but the moral is they are so popular you can find knock off parts. Some of the other MFG's make it hard to buy OE parts.

In the end the best winch in untrained hands is worse than a crappy winch in a pro's hands so whatever you get - education is key to avoiding issues. Ive done and seen many stupoied things with winches and Ive never even owned one that works lol

Reminds me - I need to see if I can find a video of our last winch fun and post it....

Treaty Oak makes a 7/8" for $120. Plus Kyle is a cool dude and a fellow Texan.

Kinetic Recovery Rope

Well the wife was unsure what size to order me so she gave me cash towards one, I'll order the 7/8 x 30' one this week. She also hooked me up with a Factor 55 Hitchlink 2.5 and some super sweet very HD shackles. What I like about them is that they give 10% to St Jude and the shackles have an anti-theft device. Not that I leave shackles on but that is a nice touch.

All for the F250. I know its not going off-road but it will see "off-road" at the farm and by the creek it can get nasty. At least I'll have something to hook a tractor onto to pull me out when this thing sinks to the frame rails. :D
