What have you done to your ride lately?

Picked up the LC from the dealership, they gave it a once over, tightened up the parking brake some, but said the cable might be stretched, it's definitely better than what it was not sure how tight they were trying to make it. Said the play in the steering was from a screwy gear box, told me to find a new since "they don't make em anymore". Supposedly fixed a gasket but i'll have to wash the undercarriage to see what they did cause it's still pretty wet with oil under there. Wasn't a dripping leak but seems to have been a light leak that was blowing back toward the drivetrain.

Dealer? Really? No good Indies?

I have this problem living in a small town. Haven't found a good indie around here yet. My old town at my last job had a kickass indie who had been a mechanic for 30+ years, had done transmission and gear rebuilds on everything from funny cars to monster trucks, fabricated metal and exhaust...

I miss him so much :(

^^This, I haven't been to a local mechanic in some time for anything (taco never needed anything, and I usually did it myself), plus all the good toyota shops are on the west coast where used parts are in abundance. In fact he said I should probably order one from california. Gonna try to get to the yard tomorrow where I saw a LC last time I was there, hopefully it is still intact as I found it. Priced the gear box at the parts stores prices range form $260-$689, so i'll keep looking lol

Plus I was in a time crunch after wasting a week trying to get the thing inspected and registered/titled in TX I finally got it looked at, wife was in a rental for almost two weeks, she was getting used to being in a new car and had to get her out of it quick before she wanted one (2012 Altima)

Get your old box rebuilt almost any junkyard unit is also going to need rebuilding

Yeah, I'll do that once I get some down time with the vehicle, I DD the runner and wife is going to DD the LC, I'll keep looking for one or get one from the yard and have it rebuilt that way I don't have much down time without two vehicles

So, thinking 34in tires...gonna wear these 33s out first, but the way I beat up tires that won't be much longer...

Two primary candidates:

BF Goodrich KM2
285/75/17
33.9in actual height
11.3in section width on 8" wheel
62lbs per tire

Interco Super Swamper LTB
34x10.50x17
33.8in actual height
10.3in section width on 8in tire
58lbs per tire

I am torn...I like that the Interco's have more aggressive tread, are slightly narrower (easier to clearance), slightly lighter (easier on the drivetrain) with no loss of clearance. They also cost less. On the other hand, they'll probably be loud as shit, not like wet road as much, and won't get as long a treadlife as the BFGs. They will also be HELLA pizza cutter at 34in tall but only a little over 10in wide.

Thoughts? Anyone got experience with the LTBs? I'm running KM2s now...I know plenty about them from experience.

My buddy had LTB's (35's) and they wore out pretty quick on a DD. They looked cool as hell though! OffRoad I was less than impressed with them really. I had 33" KM2's and I walked up shit that he sat and spun on.. no fault of driver.. they just really didn't seem to hook up like I thought they would. I'd go KM2's.

You really need to just stop kidding yourself and buy an FJ. Come out of the closet, Sean.

your a chimp, I do believe I mentioned it in text convo with you, why didn't you bring it up then?

Because I'm a douche and wanted to make fun of you online when you posted about it :)

But seriously, I didn't think about it. Figured the only reason you would go to the dealer was to buy some parts.

Here's 3 in order of who I would take it to:
Certified Automotive repair - on San Pedro; tell them I referred you (included last name)
Dealer Alternative
Broadway Garage

I'd be careful using Drews name Eric. That mechanic might expect the same favors from you that he gets from Drew. lol

The LTB's will ride like shit, handle like shit, and you'll probably need ear plugs..........but you'll never find a better tire off road.

If you get the BFG's go ahead and bet a 35, they measure to a 34 anyway.

Noted. Truck isn't daily driven so that's less of a concern.

34.8, and the width is the problem more than the height.

I don't know Larry.. his LTB's absolutely sucked ass. Probably terrain dependent though. Out here they blew on the loose rock and hard rock.. hell on the slippy mud (clay based) I thought they would work great but he slid all over. There was one trail we all hit.. I drove right up it without any issues.. it took him 10 minutes.. they just spun! Drew, Jason and Randy where there. FWIW.. he swapped out to Creepy Crawlers.
