This just started today. Metal clank when shifting to reverse. Brand new driveshaft and the bolts are tight.

Disconnect the shaft from the diff and see if its in the pinion. Or put old shaft back in and see if it does the same.

Considering the damage the previous driveshaft received it would not be out of the question.

I think its your 3rd member. I've heard that before and that is my bet.

You can't judge by that. My money is still on the 3rd member.

I had that clunk and later (days) it exploded going at 75 going down the highway. It could be something different, there is always that. But I recall the noise.

And when it blew up I had it rollback hauled to the house.. put it in the garage. I replaced that e-locker housing for an 8.4 and threw in an ARB.

I had back surgery about 6 weeks prior and swapped out axle housings and 3rds.. it was a delicate process.. my Dr would not have approved.

Is that a single piece shaft? Mine made that on occasion too, it was the driveshaft contacting the old carrier bearing mount. I had to trim that mount back to keep from interfering.

So...turned out the bolts at the transfer case weren't tight. They came loose a bit and since my transfer case skid plate was on I got lazy and didn't check those bolts and only checked the ones at the diff. My threadlocker and tightening job sucked. I found the time and made the effort to pull the skid plate this weekend and check. Kind of embarrassing really, but it's all good now.

Shit happens. Glad you got it figured out.

Glad it was a cheap and easy fix. Not something like going back into the transmission because you forgot something.
